The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued updated flood predictions for the Sheyenne and Maple Rivers. A news conference was held on Friday, March 25 by the NWS. What happens when you get Boy Scouts together? The dads come up with an idea for an automated sandbagger to help fight the flood in Lisbon. Brian Shelton and Allan Stulz were at Boy Scouts with their sons back in December, 2010 when they started thinking about a sandbagger. They came up with a rough sketch and Stulz took it to a friend who put it on CAD, a computerized drafting program. Read the rest of this entry »

The city council has decided to move forward with the buyouts that have been pending since the 2009 flood. The idea was long in coming and first presented to the city in a public meeting at Lisbon Middle School gym Monday, Jan. 31. At last week’s city council meeting Irv Rustad, Executive Director at Lake Agassiz Regional Development Corporation who was hired by the city to work with FEMA on the buyouts issue, reported to the council that the appraisals had been completed. Approximately 25 county and city officials, along with response team members and law enforcement officers met with the newly hired Ransom County Emergency Manager, Tricia Kriel, on Thursday morning, Feb. 24, to discuss flood preparedness.
Kriel went through a check list with those present. The first topic addressed was Lisbon’s levee situation. City engineer, Tracy Eslinger, Moore Engineering, explained that the current levees are at various levels, basically ranging from 15 to 17 feet. “The Highway 27 bridge floods when the river reaches 19.5 feet,” he stated. Most of the emergency levees in previous years have been built to protect the city to the 19 foot stage. It was mentioned that some of the levees have been removed for drainage purposes and will need to be filled back in. Read the rest of this entry »
